Join the Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes Center along Oso Flaco Lake's 2½ mile boardwalk to the Pacific Ocean and view first-hand the first blushes of spring as the native flora and fauna emerge from winter's rest. Huell appreciated and highlighted many of California's backroad treasures, including Guadalupe, Oso Flaco Lake, and the surrounding ancient dunes in his television shows "California's Gold" and "Visiting with Huell Howser." The annual February walk follows the path that Huell took while filming one of his popular episodes.
Meet hike docent, Ray Segovia on Saturday, February 11th at 9am to walk the same path Huell did when he visited the dunes 18 years ago. Ray will lead hikers through Oso Flaco Lake Natural Area out to the Guadalupe-Nipom
The canopy and understory of willows and wax myrtles along the first part of the riparian walk support an incredible array of diverse life near the ocean. You will see lace-like Spanish moss hanging from the tree limbs and hear the migrating songbirds. There will be silver dune lupine, coyote bush, deer weed, and dunes paintbrush, along with a wide variety of reptiles and mammals.
From the viewing platform at the end of the boardwalk, the entire San Luis Bay from Point San Luis to Mussel Rock will be seen.
Huell was a beloved man who connected deeply to many different people through his shows. He highlighted and helped conserve many off-the-beaten-path heritage sites throughout California that would have otherwise gone unnoticed. Huell visited the Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes Center on several occasions and served as the lead on the Dunes Center's capital campaign early in the organization's history and was appreciated dearly. We hope you join us in honoring his memory, conservation, and enjoying Oso Flaco Lake this February.

Catherine Litaker, harp
Stephanie Yu, violin
Two powerhouse performers come together to meld the sounds of the harp and the violin. Two seemingly different instruments, the sound that they can produce together is both interesting and dynamic. Catherine and Stephanie have been working together for many years now on a variety of projects including the original way they met: playing with the Midnight Hour.

Spring is a fantastic time for observing birds at Oso Flaco Lake. Many of our winter visitors are getting ready to migrate north to their breeding grounds and many of our spring migrants have already arrived. They will all likely be in their breeding plumage and may be singing their territorial songs. Walking through the “Willow Tunnel” at the start of the bird hike can be stunning with all the birds singing. Once we reach the lakes, ducks, American White Pelicans and rails should be plentiful. Who knows? We may even be treated to a Belted Kingfisher, an Osprey or two or maybe even a Peregrine Falcon! That’s the beauty of a bird hike; you never know what you will find until you get out there. Other critters that have been seen on these walks include Raccoons, Muskrats, Opossums, Coyotes and Bobcats. Oh, and don’t forget the Gray Whales!
This 3 mile and 2-3 hour hike will take us from the parking lot out to the ocean. Don’t be intimidated by the distance of this hike. If you only want to do a 1- or 2-mile hike, or even a just a 100-yard hike, you shouldn’t be disappointed.
So, be at the parking lot at 8:00 a.m. and join our docent John Deacon for what is sure to be a fun and informative morning. We’ve included a few pictures of the birds and creatures we may see on our hike. See you there!
