Merle Haggard was an American country music singer, songwriter, guitarist, and fiddler. He's considered one of the most influential figures in country music history, earning the nickname "the Poet of the Common Man". Iris Dement has established her own reputation on the folk circuit, but she also toured with Merle, as a keyboardist in his band. They co-wrote "This Kind of Happy", and she covered his song "Big City" on a Merle tribute album.
Songwriters at Play brings Merle and Iris together again, with a celebration of their songs performed by local and touring musicians. Show begins at 7pm at Humdinger in San Luis Obispo. Tickets are $20 general admission, available in advance through my805tix.com
We'll include Merle classics such as Mama Tried, Silver Wings, and Sing Me Back Home; plus Iris' well-known ballads Let The Mystery Be, Our Town, and When My Morning Comes Around.
The July 12 lineup includes Zoe FitzGerald Carter, Jonathan Low-Fi, Victoria Roberts, Bradly Coats, Maurice Tani, Jubal Jake, James Combs, and the duo called Familiar Strangers.
