Songwriters at Play presents an intimate concert with Greenwich Village folksinger David Massengill, hailed by the Boston Globe as "a show-stopper... His upbeat humor, enticing stage presence and ability to sling an Appalachian dulcimer over his shoulder like an electric guitar made it look and sound right. The multi-talented Massengill, a master of vivid lyrical imagery, was riveting..."
A native Tennessean, David Massengill's songs have been recorded by Joan Baez, David Bromberg, Chad Mitchell, The Roches, Lucy Kaplansky, Tom Russell, Nanci Griffith and his mentor, Dave Van Ronk, who once said Massengill "took the dull out of dulcimer." His songwriting style ranges from tragic mountain ballads to the lure of tender love songs andiconic political narratives.
"There's something disarmingly soothing about the sound of David Massengill's voice. As a thirty-year resident of New York's Greenwich Village, he speaks with efficiency, wisdom and streetwise common sense-but also that mellow Tennessee accent that envelops his words with all the charm of a soft-spoken Southern gentleman. One could listen to him speak for hours on end... and that's not a bad quality for a master storyteller like Massengill to have." -- Sing Out magazine
