In Shakespeare's time, groundlings were audience members who stood in the yard, or pit, of a theater to watch a play for a small fee:  
Cost
Groundlings paid one penny to stand in the yard, which was the area closest to the stage. They could also pay an extra penny to sit on a bench, or another penny for a more comfortable cushioned seat.  
Location
Groundlings stood in the pit, or yard, which was the area closest to the stage. They were packed in tightly and had to stand for the entire performance.  
Behavior
Groundlings were known for being rowdy, booing or hissing actors they didn't like, and cheering and applauding when they did.  
Importance
Groundlings made up about a third of the audience capacity at the Globe and their response helped determine whether a play was a success.  
Name
The term "groundling" comes from a line in Hamlet where Hamlet speaks of a performance "to split the ears of the groundlings". From an actor's perspective, the upturned faces of the groundlings may have looked like wide-mouthed fish.
