Camp Arroyo Grande Jamboree Celebrates Camp Restoration

Camp Arroyo Grande Jamboree on Sat, June 4 invites everyone to an afternoon of outdoor fun.  Free lunch from the 5-Cities Men’s Club and concert by the SLO County Band at 1pm headlines the event, plus hands-on activities in archery, blacksmithing, gardening, gemology, and STEAM programs, as well as exhibits of falconry, turtles and tortoises offer fun for the whole family.

Camp Arroyo Grande is celebrating restoration of the camp.  Since 1885, Camp Arroyo Grande hosted youth groups and community gatherings on a 29-acre parcel just a block from the Village.  The camp is owned by the 5-Cities Community Service Foundation, a non-profit created by the 5-Cities Men’s Club, who purchased the former Methodist Camp in 2017.  Upgrades to facilities turned Camp Arroyo Grande into an outdoor education experience for hundreds of youth groups, while a recent focus on the Tabernacle restoration and outdoor amphitheater make Camp Arroyo Grande available to the local community for events.  “Our goal is to be resource to the community for future generations.”, states Foundation President, J Johnson.

.

The Foundation recently restored the 12-sided Tabernacle, built in 1897, to its original look and purpose as a gathering place.  “Preserving the original siding and interior structure on the 4,000 sq ft building was our first priority”, states Steinberger.  Replacement of the aging roof and spire was needed after decades of woodpecker damage, while a new deck and hiking trails offer vistas of Arroyo Grande Valley.  Future plans include landscaping with native, drought-tolerant flora and an oak tree nursery.  The Tabernacle restoration was made possible by Roy & Bonnie Burke, long-time South County residents and business owners.

Please join us on June 4 from Noon-5pm to learn the history, see the restoration, and enjoy this hidden gem of Arroyo Grande.  Learn more at www.CampArroyoGrande.org
