"Corralling a Choir: Why Write Choral Music?

Enjoy an afternoon of fun with the performing arts community of the Central Coast! You're invited to attend the San Luis Obispo Master Chorale's event featuring Dr. Alyson McLamore, Professor of Music and Distinguished Teacher at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, as part of the Beyond the Notes series.

Dr. McLamore will present "Corralling a Choir: Why Write Choral Music?" accompanied by hors d'oeuvres and wine. Kindly pre-register for this event so your attendance is expected. Plus, share in the camaraderie with Music Director Dr. Thomas Davies, the talented singers of the Chorale, and meet the speaker!

About the presentation:
The practice of singing in harmony evolved over centuries. Learn about the cultural doors opened with this innovation and the motivations that led composers to write choral works, as well as the various audiences for choral music.

Location: Indian Hill Clubhouse at San Luis Bay Estates, 6375 Firehouse Canyon Road, Avila Beach, CA, 93424

Only 10 minutes from downtown San Luis Obispo!

About the presenter:
Alyson McLamore, Professor of Music and Distinguished Teacher at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, has studied numerous aspects of eighteenth-century British musical life, such as the concerts of the prodigies Charles Jr. and Samuel Wesley (sons of Charles Wesley, the co-founder of the Methodist Church), and the ways that “sea”-themed compositions impacted British national identity. Her textbook, Musical Theater: An Appreciation (Routledge), is in its second edition and has been translated into Chinese. She has also produced eight music resource guides for the U.S. Academic Decathlon. Dr. McLamore has written program notes for the SLO Master Chorale since 1992 (back when Tom Davies still sported a moustache).

About Beyond the Notes:
Beyond the Notes features leading scholars whose presentations highlight the times and culture surrounding the works performed by the San Luis Obispo Master Chorale. The educational events offer an in-depth look at pieces being performed and the background and history of the music, including the opportunity to meet and learn from a noted expert on the subject, an enhanced understanding of the context of the music, an increased appreciation for the music and live performance, and spreading awareness about the arts.

This presentation coincides with the SLO Master Chorale's concert on Sunday, November 24, at 3 pm at the Performing Arts Center San Luis Obispo, “Encore!”, featuring a selection of movements from favorite compositions from 40 years of performances, and the world premiere of a new work by local composer Meredith Brammeier titled That Music Always Round Me.

More details about these presentations and the concert are available at www.slomasterchorale.org.

Beyond the Notes is sponsored by the Harold J. Miossi Charitable Trust and Joan G. Sargen.
